Best herbs for health are always free in nature. Herbs and spices are the most common things that we all used in the kitchen and interestingly they have many health benefits, but most of the time we don’t really care about all the health facts that we get from herbs and spice.
Spices and herbs come mostly from parts of plants. We get them from seeds, flowers, barks, leaves, fruits and roots.
I, personally love adding spices to my food and delicacy. It provides flavour, scent and vibrant colour. But curiously, the facts that they have so much impact on our health.
Fascinatingly, spices and herbs are rich in anti-oxidants, they are anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, and presence of a few vitamins and minerals.
They are calorie free and needs no special preparation. Just add a spoon full to your food and you’re ready to go.

Turmeric is one of my favourite spice. I love its colour, flavour and texture. It is used in so many purposes. Besides cooking it is used for the facial mask, skin treatment, in treating cold and cough, anti-bacterial and antiseptic.
Health benefits of turmeric in daily purposes:
1. For a sore throat, cold and cough:
Take a teaspoon of turmeric and add it to a glass of warm milk. Instead of using sugar, add a teaspoon of honey to the milk. Drink this mixture after breakfast. It relieves sore throat, cold and cough.
2. For relieving joint pains and bruises:
Take 4-5 tablespoon of turmeric in a pot and boil it with a glass of water till a paste is formed. Apply this hot/warm paste to the bruises area as well as to the joints and leave till it’s dry.
Remove the dry turmeric with lukewarm water. Repeat this process till bruises disappear. This method relieves joint pains in old people too.

2. Siam Weed:
This herb has many common names but popularly people think it’s a weed! It is also known as Christmas bush, devil weed, and camphor grass. Chromolaena odorata (aka Eupatorium odorata) is the botanical name of the plant.
It is native to Myanmar and was first found in Queensland.
Traditionally it has been used in North East India for it’s healing property and many of our ancestral believe that it was first introduced to North East India, during the second world war.
1. Prevent and heal diarrhoea:
Siam weeds prevent and heal diarrhoea faster than most medicines.
Take few siam weed leaves and grind them with a glass of water. Drink this liquid to prevent and heal diarrhoea. You can add lemon juice too.
2. Prevent bleeding during minor cuts:
In case of minor cuts and emergency, Siam weed leaves can be used to cover wounds to stop bleeding immediately.
Crush the leaves and apply on wounded parts to stop bleeding. It also has the property to heal wound faster.
3. Cure stomach pain:
If you have stomach pain, used siam weeds leave as an antidote. Take some leaves and grind them. To this, add a glass of water and your antidote for stomach pain is ready.
Rosemary is a fragrant herb which is commonly used in cooking and body perfumes.
It originates from the Mediterranean region and is a rich source of antioxidant.
1. Protects and improve the brain:
Studies have shown that rosemary protects the brain from tissue damage and reduce blood clot. It improves memory and helps reduce depression.
2. Fight cancer:
Rosemary has constituents that fight cancer cells. The carnosic acid found in rosemary is the main constituent that prevents and fight cancer like leukaemia, colon cancer, ovaries and cervix cancer.
3. Protects the skin:
Researches have found that rosemary extracts protect the skin from UV rays damage. It is also effective in fighting acne and breakout on the skin.
Although lemongrass is not a herb nor a spice, it is largely used as a flavour in cooking and tea making. It also acts as a spice due to its wonderful aroma.
It has a fragrance of a lemon, but rather mild and found its way through Ayurvedic medicine as lemon grass has many medicinal properties.
1. Good for digestion:
Lemongrass has a cooling effect and soothes the stomach. It has a compound that helps to digest the food. Therefore it is best taken after a meal along with tea; lemongrass tea or it can be consumed during lunch or dinner. It reduces bloating, constipation and indigestion.

Lemongrass is loaded with vitamin C, anti-oxidants and anti-fungal properties which strengthen the immunity and helps fight cold and flu.
Boil some fresh lemongrass along with cloves for few mins. You can add red tea leaves for better taste. Use this liquid as a drink to reduce cold and flu.
3. Relieves menstrual pain:
Lemongrass tea provides relief from hot flashes and reduces menstrual pain. It is an excellent source for women’s health as it has a soothing effect on the body. However, people with diabetes should consult a doctor before using it as lemongrass is known to reduce blood sugar level.
Ginger another common spice has many health benefits too. Mostly used in cooking and digestive treatment. Here’s are a few benefits of ginger.
Ginger contains a substance called gingerol, a very powerful medicinal property, which helps reduce inflammation in the body. It reduces many digestive related problems such as stomach upset and gastric problem.
Here’s what you need to reduce stomach upset and inflammation:
Take freshly cut ginger and dip it in a glass of lukewarm water for 5 mins. Used this water as a drink to reduce inflammation and stomach problem.
Ginger water is actually very good for health; you can drink it every day before a meal. It reduces belly fats too.
2. Prevent nausea and motion sickness:
Ginger is known to reduce nausea and motion sickness.
Take a slice of ginger and have it, if you suffer from nausea and morning sickness. This will greatly reduce the problem caused by motion sickness and nausea.
3. Reduce muscle pain:
People who suffer from muscle pain or muscle cramps can have ginger water mixed with honey to reduce the pain.
What you need:
Take a glass of lukewarm water and add 3-4 slices of freshly cut ginger in it. Add a teaspoon of honey in it and stir well for 5-10 minutes. Drink this water to reduce cramps and muscles pain.

Garlic has a very tangy smell when eaten raw. Many people dislike using garlic because of its smell, but it does smell good when fried and cook properly. Garlic has many medicinal values.
1. Reduce cold and cough:
Garlic has a strong property in reducing cold, cough and sore throat.
What you need:
Take 3-5 cloves of garlic and deep fry it in mustard oil. Allow the oil to cool down for a few minutes.
Take this fried garlic along with oil and eat them and applied the remaining oil on your throat. This will greatly reduce cough and sore throat.
2. Lower cholesterol and blood pressure:
Even though garlic lower cholesterol and blood pressure but it should be taken with cautions when it comes to blood pressure.
People whose blood pressure fluctuate, should not take garlic as an option to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. Consult the doctor if blood pressure fluctuates.
A person with low BP should not use garlic; however, it will be very beneficial for a person with high BP, as garlic reduce high blood pressure.
Garlic helps reduce cholesterol too, but only people who have a normal BP can use garlic to reduce cholesterol.
3. Prevent Dementia and Alzheimer’s diseases:
Garlic has the tendency to reduce brain diseases such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s. It fights against the oxidative damage of free radicals in the brain. A clove or two of garlic in the diet during lunch will help fight against the diseases.
Mint is a simple herb with great medicinal uses. Mostly used in cooking, flavouring and making chutneys. Here’s are few health benefits that we get from mint leaves or pudina, as we called it in India.
1. Aids digestion and digestive disorder:
If you suffer digestion problems or any digestive disorder, take few mint leaves and grind it in a blender until a paste is formed. Take this green paste and have it with your breakfast and lunch. This helps reduce any digestive disorder in the stomach.
