5 easy ingredients for a sunscreen that you’ll love making

A well-made sunscreen will protect your skin from sunburnt which leads into pigmentation; fast ageing and dull looking skin.

Sunscreen ingredients should not be irritating on the skin but it should protect the skin from harsh UV radiation; especially if the skin is sensitive.

Avoid these ingredients while making your own sunscreen.

1. Ingredients for sunscreen without Zinc Oxide:

Natural organic sunscreen

Personally, I like my sunscreen without zinc oxide in it. Most homemade sunscreens used zinc oxide as a base, but that depends on the amount used.

What you need:

  • 1/4 cup beeswax [Buy here] ( depending on how thick you want it)
  • 1/2 cup olive oil [Here]
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil [Get it here]
  • Vitamin E capsule [Buy Here]
  • 15-20 drops of raspberry seed oil [Here]
  • Any fragrance (vanilla or lavender) [Here]

Method:

  • Melt beeswax, olive oil and coconut oil in a double boiler; stir and mix them well until a smooth paste is formed.
  • Remove from heat and add 15-20 drops of raspberry oil along with 1 tbsp of vitamin E capsule in it.
  • Add fragrance. Stir well and keep stirring till a fluffy paste appear.
  • Now your homemade sunscreen is ready to use as a 25-30 SPF

This sunscreen can last up to 3-4 months without preservative. You can add the preservative to make it last longer.

2. Ingredients for a sunscreen with zinc oxide:

Ingredients: 

  • 1/2 cup Beeswax [Buy Here]
  • 1-2 tbsp Shea butter (depend on how thick you want it)
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil [Here]
  • 1/4 cup almond oil
  • 1 tbsp vitamin E capsule [Buy Here]
  • 2 tbsp zinc oxide powder [Here]
  • 15 drops Carrot seed oil [Here]
  • Any fragrance (vanilla or lavender) [Get it here]

Method:

  • Take beeswax, shea butter, coconut oil, almond oil and vitamin E in a double boiler and melt them; stir and mix them thoroughly.
  • Remove from heat and add 15 drops of carrot seed oil and stir. Add fragrance
  • Now carefully add 2 tbsp of zinc oxide powder in the mixture. Cover your mouth and nose while using zinc powder.
  • Mixed slowly and thoroughly until no more clumped of zinc oxide powder.
  • Pour it in the desired container and let it rest at room temperature.
  • Add preservative if you want
  • Now the sunscreen is ready for used as a 30 SPF.

3. With Aloe Vera: For oily skin

If you have oily skin and you are prone to breakouts, the above two methods might not be good for your skin. Using aloe vera gel is helpful for oily skin

What you need:

  • 1/4 cup beeswax
  • 1/2 cup almond oil
  • Essential oil
  • 2 tbsp Aloe vera gel (freshly grind or made)
  • 2 tsp zinc oxide powder
  • 10-15 drops of raspberry or carrot seed oil

Method:

  • Melt beeswax and almond oil in a double boiler. Stir well and add 5-6 drops of essential oil.
  • Remove from heat and carefully add zinc oxide powder, covering your mouth and nose.
  • Now add 2 tbsp of freshly grind aloe vera gel or bought from the market along with 10-15 drops of carrot or raspberry seed oil. Stir and mix well till a smooth paste is form.
  • Put it in the desired container and your sunscreen is ready for used.

Natural organic sunscreens are good moisturizer as they are rich in natural oils.

4. With calamine powder:

This method is used for the substitution of zinc oxide powder. In place of zinc oxide, calamine powder is used. Calamine powder is less abrasive compared to zinc oxide and it has a substance named Kaolin, which promotes radiate skin and lighten dark spot.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup calamine powder
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup beeswax or shea butter [Buy Here]
  • Few drops of essential oil
  • Red raspberry seed oil or Carrot seed oil

Method:

  • First melt coconut oil, olive oil and beeswax in a double boiler. Stir and mixed well.
  • Remove from heat and add a few drops of essential oil and 15 drops of carrot seed oil. Mixed well.
  • Now gently add calamine powder and stir thoroughly while adding till a smooth paste is formed.
  • And lo! your sunscreen is ready.
  • You can add a preservative if needed.

5. Ingredients for a sunscreen with Octyl salicylate 

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup calamine powder
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup beeswax or shea butter [Buy Here]
  • Few drops of essential oil [Here]
  • A few drops of octyl salicylate for UV protection

Methods:

  • Mix all oil in a double boiler and pour calamine powder into it.
  • Then melt shea butter separately and add it slowly to the above mixture.
  • Then lastly add a few drops of octyl salicylate into it and let it cool down.
  • Your sunscreen is ready.

  • Homemade sunscreens are organic and contain less to no chemicals at all.
  • They are non-toxic and can easily be used for children who are underage.

Do Homemade ingredients for sunscreen have SPF?

Yes, homemade sunscreen has natural SPF ( Sun protection factor). Since homemade sunscreen are made by using natural ingredients, these ingredients have SPF in them. Let’s take a look:

  • Almond oil – 5 SPF
  • Coconut oil – 4-6 SPF
  • Red Raspberry seed oil – 25-50 SPF
  • Carrot seed oil – 35-45 SPF
  • Shea butter – 3-8 SPF
  • Zinc oxide – 2-20 SPF
  • Aloe Vera – 15-20 SPF
